How to Build the Perfect Indoor Fort with Your Kids
Nothing sparks your child’s imagination more than building a fort. Creating a structure made of items found around the house gets their brains whirling. They can be a pirate on his ship, a doctor in her office, a princess in a castle, or a dragon in a cave. Fort are also a great way to spend time with your children and bond as you create fun adventures together. Here are some tips to help you build the perfect indoor fort with your kids.
1 – Make it Cozy
Create a fort that your children want to curl up inside of and spend time in. Have your child help you collect pillows and blankets from around the house to add to your building materials. You can even make a game out of looking for items. Maybe you only use pillows that are a certain color, or you find a specific blanket with their favorite pattern.
Once you and your child have designed your soft and cozy fort, make it even more dreamy. Add a lamp inside for soft lighting and turn off the overhead lamps in the room. This creates the perfect space to lounge around. Read a book together or create shadow puppets on the walls of your cozy new fort.
2 – Personalize It
Your children can add their own unique personality to their indoor fort. Ask them to draw pictures to use as decorations and tape them up inside the fort. If you have empty cardboard boxes lying around the house, you can let your kids decorate these as pieces of furniture or props for their next playtime adventure.
The more your children are involved with building the fort, the more they will love to play in it. Have them name the fort and hang a sign over the entrance displaying the name. Let your children lead the way as you build a fort together, so their personal touches can
3 – Make It Quick
If your children love to play in forts on a regular basis, it can be time consuming to build an indoor fort and then take it down often. This can create big messes in your home, and your kids could lose interest during the process, leaving you to clean up. Premade forts, tents, or teepees are great options for a quick way to set up an indoor fort.
Find soft, organic teepees designed for children at shops like Little Eco One. You can also use camping equipment you already own or purchase a small camping tent from a sporting goods store. Choose a teepee or tent that can easily be stored in your home without taking up too much time and space.
4 – Leave It Up
Sometimes it is best to leave your indoor fort standing, instead of taking it down after playtime. If you are able to give up the space in your home for a little while, your kids can get a lot of usage out of your fort. Change up the design to fit whatever their imagination can create.
A fort is the perfect place to play and rest if it is raining outside and too wet to go in the yard. Your children can also enjoy a fort if they are home from school because of bad weather or illness. A fun and creative fort will drive the bad weather blues away in no time!
5 – Create a Movie Set
You and your kids can create an entire movie in just one afternoon! Have your kids make a movie script and choose who will play different parts. Together, you can design a fort to act as your movie set. Your children can create props, decorate the fort with items from around the house, and plan exactly how they want their movie to look. All you have to do is film the movie on your phone or camera. Even after you take down the tent, you can all watch the movie together over and over. Your kids will have so much fun creating sets and coming up with a movie that is all their own. Invite their friends over for a viewing party and serve popcorn inside your fort! When it comes to spending time with your kids, a fort is an awesome experience. You can help your children think creatively and imagine stories and worlds all in your living room. Keep an organic teepee or camping tent on hand for easy setup or create a brand new fort every time. With all of the fun they’ll be having, you may have a hard time getting your kids to leave the fort!
